Note:
A.J. Casson (1898-1992) had a feel for clouds. In many of his paintings, they play a primary role influencing the mood of a scene.
This distant view of Lake of Two Rivers in Algonquin Provincial Park is a studied impression of the river’s shoreline. A thick forest at the water’s edge is surmounted by blue-green hills beyond. Both forest and hills serve as foundation for the celestial ballet unfolding above. White clouds in the darkening sky anticipate a downpour or signal its end. Each element in the painting—water, trees, mountains and sky—appears as a block of colour each compositionally balancing the other. Casson’s skills in graphic and commercial design work are transparently evident.
