Provenance:
Family of the artist
Literature:
Iris Nowell, Painters Eleven: The Wild Ones of Canadian Art, Vancouver, 2010, page 104.
Note:
While very much aware of trends in abstraction, Luke’s early painting style was heavily influenced by the Group of Seven. By the mid-40s she realized a desire for more advanced training and enrolled in summer school at the Banff School of Fine Arts where she met Jock Macdonald (see lot 99), who would become a lifelong friend.
Luke is credited with first bringing together many of the artists who would form the Painters 11 when she developed an exhibition of abstract paintings in Oshawa in 1952.
