The important representative of Czechoslovakian historical painting and portraitist, Václav Brožík studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts (1868-1870) with A. Lhota and E. Lauffre, at the Academy in Dresden (1871), and in Munich (1873) and Paris where he settled. He was one of the official painters of Austria-Hungary and was the most famous Czech artist of the last quarter of the 19th century.
He was the holder of the Cross of the Legion of Honor, a member of the Paris Academy of Arts, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (1893) and a member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts. He exhibited in the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands and other countries. He belonged to the painterly generation of the National Theater.
