Painted in April, 1940.
Groves writes that the village of Ste. Louise was a favourite for Jackson who revisited it many times “to paint old barns, old sleighs” as he wrote when planning a visit in March, 1940. On April 9, 1940 Jackson, writing in his notes from Ste. Louise, L’Islet, explained “...I like Ste. Louise because it is just a typical little French Canadian village. The people are nice...and the little hotel is cosy...nearly all the sunny days have been accompanied by cold sharp winds which is no fun.”
