WILLIAM KURELEK, R.C.A.
Provenance:
The Isaacs Gallery, Toronto.
Private Collection, Victoria.
Exhibited:
William Kurelek, a retrospective, Edmonton Art Gallery, Edmonton, 20 Sept.-20 Oct., 1970, no.45.
Note:
In Sudbury Diaries (1966), Kurelek describes his painting technique while working on the Coniston landscape: “I had quite a lot of trouble rendering fog because I had forgot my atomizer. Another thing that I forgot to bring is sandpaper for sharpening my razor blades for scratching out highlights and rendering grassy areas. If I wanted to be fanatically precise I could spend a whole day working on a piece of rock no bigger than what I would hold in my hand... I kept plugging at it and I finally got the swing of it. It seems that I have to learn to get away more from the tyranny of the subject before me.”
Another Sudbury work by Kurelek is in the Laurentian University Gallery (Rainy Day near Sudbury, 1966).
Coniston, Ontario is a suburb of Sudbury and was named for a novel set at Coniston Lake in the Lake District of England.
